French Stoneware Confit Pot

Signed on the front with the impressed mark "A. Veillard, Clermont-Royat", this French stoneware confit pot dates from the late 19th or early 20th century. Clermont-Royat, located in the Auvergne region of central France, was a documented center of stoneware production, and Veillard was an active potter and merchant in that area. The number "82" impressed on the lower body likely indicates a mold or batch reference from the workshop.

The pot is thrown in grey stoneware and covered with a salt-influenced glaze that settles into a soft blue-grey tone across the body, deepening slightly around the relief details and handles. Two small horizontal loop handles are set symmetrically at the shoulder. The front bears a raised heraldic shield cartouche — a crest featuring a figure at the top and divided lower quarters — which serves as the maker's emblem. Three incised horizontal bands encircle the mid-section, a typical decorative element in regional French utilitarian stoneware. The rolled rim at the top is evenly formed. The base, visible in photos, is unglazed and shows natural stoneware clay with light surface deposits consistent with age and use.

The pot measures approximately 12cm tall (as stated by the seller), approximately 4.7 inches in height. Width across the handles is estimated at approximately 11cm / 4.3 inches based on the photos. The body diameter alone is approximately 8cm / 3.1 inches.

A signed regional piece from a named Auvergne potter, this confit pot is of genuine interest to collectors of French provincial stoneware, particularly those focused on signed workshop pieces from the Clermont-Ferrand area.
