French Stoneware Confit Pot
A French stoneware confit pot of traditional form, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. This French stoneware confit pot belongs to a well-established category of French provincial kitchen pottery, produced in significant quantities across stoneware-producing regions of France for use in food preservation, particularly the storage of duck and goose confit.
The pot is wheel-thrown in dense, fired stoneware clay and covered with a grey-blue glaze that shows visible crazing across the upper shoulder and neck — a characteristic feature of aged stoneware glazes. The glaze transitions from a slightly deeper grey-blue tone at the upper body to a more neutral grey toward the base, where the glaze thins naturally. Two small loop handles are applied symmetrically on either side of the shoulder, typical of this pot form. Small dark specks are distributed across the surface, consistent with iron inclusions in the clay body. The unglazed foot ring and base reveal a sandy, light buff-coloured stoneware body. On the base, an incised mark reading what appears to be "10" or a similar number is visible — likely a production or size reference mark applied before firing.
The pot measures approximately 16.5cm tall / 6.5" in height. Width across the body at its widest point is estimated at approximately 15cm / 5.9", and approximately 20cm / 7.9" measured handle to handle. The opening diameter is approximately 9cm / 3.5". These measurements are based on the seller-provided height and photo estimation.
A piece of this type suits a range of decorative uses: as a vessel for dried botanicals, kitchen utensils, or as a standalone object on a shelf or dresser. Antique French stoneware pots with intact handles are increasingly sought by collectors of French country and farmhouse decor.
