French Stoneware Bottle
A French stoneware bottle of cylindrical form, most likely dating from the 19th century and typical of utilitarian ceramic production from that era. This French stoneware bottle would have been used to store water, wine, spirits or mineral water, and examples of this plain, undecorated type were produced in quantity across stoneware-producing regions of France including the Rhine valley and northern France.
The body is tall and cylindrical with a rounded shoulder tapering to a short neck finished with a distinctly turned collar rim — a classic feature of French stoneware bottles of this period. The surface is unglazed or very lightly iron-washed, presenting a uniform dark reddish-brown to warm brown tone throughout. The texture is matte and slightly gritty, consistent with high-fired stoneware clay. No maker's mark, stamp or impressed seal is visible on any surface. The base shows concentric throwing rings from the wheel, confirming hand-thrown production. A small chip or crack is visible at the base, as visible in the photos, and should be considered when assessing condition. No applied decoration, inscription or glaze is present on the body.
The bottle measures approximately 24cm tall / 9.4" in height. Width at the widest point of the body is estimated at approximately 7cm / 2.8" based on the photos.
A piece of this character suits a range of display contexts — on a kitchen shelf, in a rustic interior, or as part of a collection of antique French stoneware. The plain form and aged surface give it a quiet, utilitarian character that reads well in both modern and period settings.
