French Silver Plated Wine Basket

A French silver plated wine basket of the type used at the dining table to cradle and present a bottle of wine during service, keeping it at a slight recline to avoid disturbing sediment. This style of French silver plated wine basket was a standard fixture in bourgeois and restaurant settings from the late 19th century through the early 20th century, and examples of this quality remain sought after by collectors and decorators alike.

The body is constructed from flat silver plated metal strips woven in a tight over-under basket weave pattern, closely replicating the form of a traditional wicker panier. The base shows the same woven construction with a neat oval finish. The upper section features vertical wire uprights that form an open gallery around the rim, secured at the top by a twisted rope-pattern border wire. The handle is formed from two twisted rope wires joined at the apex with a short chain link section, a detail consistent with French silversmith work of the period. Small looped ear attachments at each short end provide additional structural support. The silver plating retains good overall coverage with some natural patina and minor tarnishing visible in the recesses of the weave, consistent with age and use.
