French silver plated napkin rings
A handsome pair of French silver plated napkin rings, each stamped with the GALLIA mark -- the house silver-plate brand of Christofle, widely produced in France from the late nineteenth century through the Art Deco decades. These cylindrical ronds de serviette, as napkin rings are known in French, carry the clean, architectural lines that place them firmly in the Art Deco period, when even everyday tableware was treated as an occasion for restrained graphic design.
Each ring is finished in a bright silver plate with two bold engraved bands running the circumference, filled with a closely spaced linear motif that catches the light beautifully against the plain polished body. The form is classic and versatile: wide enough to hold a generously folded linen napkin, substantial in the hand, and confident on a table. Napkin rings of this type were a fixture of the French bourgeois table between the wars, assigned to each family member and brought out daily -- a small habit of elegance that translated a linen napkin into a personal accessory. Today they work equally well on a formal dinner table, a casual breakfast tray or grouped on a shelf as a collected pair.
Condition and patina consistent with age. Light surface scratches and minor tarnishing are visible on the exterior, consistent with decades of use; the silver plate remains largely intact and bright overall.
Approx. 1.9 in diameter x 1.2 in tall (4.8 cm x 3 cm).
