French Silver Plated Champagne Ice Bucket
A classic French silver plated champagne ice bucket -- seau a champagne in French -- made by Saint Hilaire, a well-regarded French silverplate house whose name is stamped clearly on the base. The form is the one every French bistro and grand hotel knew well: a deep, tulip-shaped bowl that widens at the lip to cradle a bottle at just the right angle, finished with a finely detailed gadroon border at the rim and a matching band at the foot.
What sets this piece apart are the two cast lion head ring handles, each holding a twisted rope ring in its mouth -- a motif drawn from French neoclassical silversmithing that translated beautifully into 20th-century hotel silver. The exterior carries a high mirror polish that still reflects the room, with the warm tonal shifts that come with honest use. On a bar cart, a sideboard or a tablescape, it reads as confident and well-bred without trying too hard. The stamped mark reads Saint Hilaire / France.
Condition and patina consistent with age. Light surface wear to the body and some tarnish in the recesses of the handles, entirely in keeping with a piece that has been used and enjoyed.
Approx. 8.1 in tall (20.5 cm).
