French silver plated champagne bucket
A classic French silver plated champagne bucket of the kind that graced hotel dining rooms and bourgeois tables throughout mid-twentieth-century France, where the ritual of chilling a bottle at the table was taken seriously. The urn-shaped body rises from a stepped, gadroon-edged pedestal to a wide, beaded rim collar -- a restrained neoclassical silhouette that reads equally well in a traditional interior or a more eclectic one. The piece is silver plated over a base metal, a format long produced by French silversmithing houses for both the hospitality trade and domestic use.
The surface carries a bright polish on the exterior with the warm, coppery blush that appears on silver plate as the top layer thins with honest use -- a quality many collectors and decorators actively seek. Two ring handles hang from shell-form finials, and a matching applied shell cartouche sits centred on the front of the body, lending the whole piece a quiet, formal elegance. On a bar cart, a side table or a dining sideboard, it makes a handsome vessel for a bottle of white or rose, or for flowers, a plant, or even kitchen utensils on an open shelf.
Condition and patina consistent with age. The interior shows significant tarnishing and wear to the silver plating, exposing the base metal throughout; the exterior carries light surface scratches visible under close inspection. These characteristics are entirely normal for a working piece of this age and add to its lived-in character.
