French silver plated champagne bucket
A classic French silver plated champagne bucket by Ercuis, one of France's most respected silverplate houses, whose pieces have graced the tables of grand hotels and private dining rooms since the nineteenth century. The form is confident and well balanced: a gently flared body rising from a beaded pedestal foot, fitted on each side with a cast scroll handle that curls into a tight volute at the top and fans into an acanthus-leaf bracket below, a detail typical of the restrained decorative vocabulary that French silversmiths carried from the Art Deco period well into the mid-twentieth century.
The exterior retains a strong mirror polish over much of the body, with the warm copper undertone of the base metal beginning to show through where the silver plating has thinned with honest use -- a characteristic these pieces develop gracefully over decades. The interior shows the natural darkening that comes from contact with ice and water over many years of service. On a bar cart, a sideboard, or a dining table, it functions beautifully as a wine or champagne cooler, and its handsome silhouette makes it equally at home as a vessel for cut flowers or a standalone decorative accent.
Condition and patina consistent with age. Light surface scratches are visible across the body, with scattered oxidation spots on the exterior and more pronounced darkening on the interior.
Approx. 9.1 in tall (23 cm).
