French silver plated champagne bucket
A classic French silver plated champagne bucket -- known in France as a seau a champagne -- with the confident, well-balanced form that has graced hotel dining rooms and bourgeois tables alike for generations. The body rises in a graceful tulip flare from a reeded foot to a broad, fluted rim edged with fine beading; the silhouette is one that French silversmiths refined through the mid-twentieth century into an almost architectural standard.
What gives this piece its particular appeal are the two cast lion-head handles, each holding a twisted rope ring in its jaws -- a motif borrowed from neoclassical design that pairs strength with elegance. The silver plating is bright and highly polished, reflecting the room like a mirror, and the engraved arch frieze just below the rim adds a layer of hand-finished detail that lifts it well above ordinary hotel-ware. At home today it reads equally well chilling a bottle of rose on a summer table, holding fresh flowers on a kitchen counter, or anchoring a bar cart with handsome authority.
Condition and patina consistent with age. The interior shows light wear as expected from normal use; the exterior plating remains bright and largely intact, with no significant losses visible.
Measurements are approx. 8.1 in tall (20.5 cm).
