French Rustic Pottery Vase Half-Glazed Terracotta Stoneware Vintage 14102620

French Rustic Pottery Vase

A small French rustic pottery vase in hand-thrown stoneware, the kind of utilitarian piece that would have sat on a farmhouse dresser or workshop shelf across the French countryside. The form is compact and well-balanced: a rounded belly that narrows to a short collar neck with a gently rolled rim, all turned with an assured, unhurried hand that speaks to a regional craft tradition rather than industrial production.

What draws the eye immediately is the two-tone finish. The upper half and interior carry a warm amber-orange lead glaze, pooling and shifting in tone as it catches the light, while the lower half is left in its raw sandy clay -- a hallmark of the pot au grais, the functional stoneware vessels made in quantity across rural France from the nineteenth century well into the twentieth. A small oval firing mark sits on the shoulder where the glaze ran and fused, a natural badge of the kiln. The unglazed base reveals a coarse, pale terracotta body with the slight irregularities and surface texture that confirm hand-throwing. On a shelf, a windowsill or a kitchen counter, it holds dried stems or a single branch with the kind of quiet, grounded presence that no modern reproduction quite matches.

Condition and patina consistent with age. Light wear and minor surface pitting to the unglazed lower section, consistent with a working life; the glaze on the upper body is intact with no chips or losses noted.

Approx. 5.7 in tall (14.5 cm).
