French Pottery Fruit Colander Bowl

A hand-thrown French pottery fruit colander bowl, made from red earthenware and finished with a contrasting two-tone glaze treatment inside and out. This French pottery fruit colander bowl was designed for draining freshly washed fruit, a common functional form found in French country kitchens and farm households from the mid-20th century onward. The perforated base allows water to drain freely, making it a practical piece intended for daily use rather than purely decorative display.

The exterior carries a rich terracotta-brown glaze with cream slip splashed across the lower body, while the interior is coated in a pale golden yellow slip over which sweeping strokes of dark green copper-oxide glaze have been applied freehand. The green decoration runs in bold, irregular streaks and pooled patches across the cream ground, creating a naturalistic, painterly effect typical of regional French slipware traditions. A thin dark manganese line traces the inner rim. The glaze on the interior is glossy and well-fired. The underside remains partially unglazed, showing the red-firing clay body clearly. No maker's mark, stamp, or signature is visible in the photos.

The bowl measures approximately 20cm diameter by 7cm in height, which converts to roughly 7.9" wide by 2.8" tall. The shallow, wide form with a gently flared profile is well-suited to holding a quantity of small fruit. Condition is used with minor surface wear consistent with age and prior household use; no chips or cracks are visible in the photos.

This French pottery fruit colander bowl works well as a functional kitchen piece or as a display item on a shelf or sideboard alongside other regional earthenware.
