French Porcelain Lattice Compote
A French porcelain lattice compote of the type produced throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries for formal dining table service. This French porcelain lattice compote features an open reticulated basket bowl raised on a turned pedestal stem set into a square stepped base, a form closely associated with French and continental European dessert service traditions. The piece is covered overall in a white glossy glaze with no applied decoration other than the pierced lattice work itself.
The basket bowl is formed with two rows of interlaced open arches creating a classic reticulated pattern, with a scalloped rim at the upper edge. The interior of the bowl is flat and smooth, glazed in the same white. The pedestal is classic in profile with a disc foot and rounded collar, rising from a square plinth. Visible at the center of the bowl interior is a small metal bolt or rivet, indicating the bowl and base are joined by an internal fixing rather than being fired as a single unit. The glaze is white throughout with a slight warm tone. No maker's mark or stamp is visible in the provided photographs.
The compote measures approximately 23.5cm wide x 19cm tall, which converts to approximately 9.3" wide x 7.5" tall. These proportions place it firmly in the mid-size range for a dessert compote, well suited for use as a fruit stand or display piece.
A white reticulated compote of this type pairs well with other white ironstone or porcelain table objects and works equally as a display piece for dried botanicals or small fruit. Collectors of French white ceramics and formal dining antiques will find this a practical and appealing addition.
