French oil painting still life
A signed French oil painting still life, rendered in oil on linen canvas and almost certainly dating from the early to mid twentieth century, a period when academic still-life painting flourished in French ateliers and art schools alike. The composition is generously appointed: a dark, ornately gilded teapot anchors the centre, flanked by a hand-painted floral faience pitcher, two white porcelain cups on saucers, a cut blood orange, a fruit plate holding apples and tangerines, a small decorative porcelain bowl, a clear tumbler and a wine bottle bearing a red wax seal. The mood is warm and intimate, the kind of table one might have found in a well-furnished French bourgeois interior of the interwar years.
The painting carries a legible red cursive signature in the lower right corner, reading J. Roberjot or very close to it. The palette is deep and confident, with rich brown shadows grounding the vivid reds, oranges and greens of the objects, in the tradition of post-Impressionist French still-life work. The canvas is unframed, which makes it easy to present in a simple floater frame of your choice, and it would sit naturally in a dining room, kitchen gallery wall or reading corner where its earthy, food-centered warmth can be appreciated up close. The aged stretcher bars and the texture of the linen weave, visible along the edges, add to its honest, handmade character.
Condition and patina consistent with age. The canvas edges show some wear and the top stretcher bar has aged and roughened with time, as clearly visible in the photos; the painted surface itself reads well and holds together solidly.
Approx. 25.6 in wide x 18.1 in high (65 x 46 cm).
