French Oak Wood Wine Pitcher

A French oak wood wine pitcher of coopered construction, assembled from staved oak planks bound with hand-hammered copper bands secured by copper rivets. This type of French oak wood wine pitcher was traditionally used in wine-producing regions of France for serving cider or wine at the table, and represents a well-established tradition of provincial cooperage craft. The form combines the structural logic of barrel-making with the functional shape of a pouring vessel.

The body is built from narrow oak staves, darkened with age to a deep walnut-brown tone, with visible wood grain across each plank. Three copper hoops encircle the body at the base, mid-section and upper taper, each fastened with domed copper rivets. The upper portion tapers sharply into a conical copper spout, hand-worked and showing the texture of hammer marks consistent with hand-fabrication. A looped copper handle is attached at the shoulder and base of the neck with copper rivets. The spout shows age-related surface oxidation and minor pitting, consistent with honest use and age. No cracks or structural damage are visible to the staved body. The copper retains good patina with natural tarnish in the recessed areas.
