Moustiers Faience Plate

Handmade in the French tradition of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, this Moustiers faience plate displays the polychrome bird decoration closely associated with the faience workshops of that Provencal town. The back bears a hand-written inscription reading "Mufaraggi a Moustiers / fait main" -- indicating it was made by hand (fait main) at Moustiers, with the maker identified as Mufaraggi, a family name recorded among artisan potters active in Moustiers during the 20th century.

The central well depicts two stylized exotic birds rendered in golden yellow, ochre, green and blue, perched on a spray of green foliage with small butterflies and floral sprigs scattered around them. This bird motif, sometimes called "oiseaux de Berain" in the Moustiers tradition, is painted freehand with visible brushwork. The rim features a reticulated (pierced) border of square openings arranged in a continuous band, with a scalloped outer edge decorated in cobalt blue scrollwork and small floral clusters in green and amber yellow. The glaze is white tin-glaze typical of faience, with visible crazing to the reverse consistent with age and normal use. The base shows a terracotta-colored foot ring with the maker's inscription applied in black underglaze script.

The plate measures approximately 26cm in diameter (10.2"), as stated in the seller's description. Depth is shallow, consistent with a decorative display plate.
