French marble mortar
A handsome French marble mortar -- mortier in French -- carved from a single block of white and gray veined stone, almost certainly Carrara-type marble of the kind long prized by French craftsmen for kitchen and apothecary use. The four-lobed, flower-shaped rim is the defining feature: each rounded lobe extends generously outward from the central bowl, giving the piece a sculptural presence that goes well beyond purely utilitarian origins. Marble mortars of this form were a fixture of serious French country kitchens and village pharmacies from the late nineteenth century onward.
Seen from above, the lobed silhouette reads almost like a quatrefoil, a motif both classical and quietly decorative. The exterior carries a warm, softly matte patina where years of use have smoothed the surface, while the top face retains stronger white-and-gray veining. The deep, rounded interior bowl is proportioned for real work -- grinding spices, herbs or salt -- and the weighted base keeps everything stable. Today it sits equally well as a catch-all on a kitchen counter, a display piece on a shelf, or a planter for a small succulent.
Condition and patina consistent with age. Light surface scratching visible inside the bowl and on the exterior body, typical of a well-used working mortar; no chips or cracks.
Approx. 8.7 in wide x 3.9 in high (22 x 10 cm); shorter dimension across the body between lobes approx. 6.9 in (17.5 cm).
