French Ironstone Tureen Base Blue White Transferware Antique 06102635

French ironstone tureen base

A French ironstone tureen base -- the soupiere base without its lid -- decorated in the neoclassical style that was common in French faience production from the mid-nineteenth century onward. Ironstone, known in France as faience fine or terre de fer, was the workhorse ceramic of French bourgeois and farmhouse tables alike, and pieces in this blue-on-white format were produced by numerous manufacturers in the north and east of France. The form and decoration place this firmly in the French country tradition.

The body is oval, set on a low pedestal foot, with two small horizontal loop handles on the short sides. The exterior carries a crisp blue transferware band running the full circumference: a central register with alternating rosette medallions, laurel-leaf garlands, and scrolling volutes, framed above and below by fine dotted borders and a delicate drop-arch frieze. The handles are decorated with a small repeating trefoil chain. The foot also carries a dotted border band. The interior glaze is plain white and glossy. No maker's mark, stamp, or backstamp is visible in any photo.

Condition is consistent with age and domestic use. The glaze shows overall fine crazing across the exterior and interior. There is visible light brown age staining concentrated in the interior center and along one section of the rim. Photo 6 shows a hairline crack or old repair line running diagonally across one handle where it meets the body wall. Minor surface scuffs are present on the foot ring. No large chips to the decorated band are visible. Sold as pictured.

12.4 x 8.7 x 5.7 in (31.5 x 22 x 14.5 cm), measured without handles. Handles add approximately 2 in (5 cm) to the overall width. This base works as a display bowl for fruit, dried botanicals, or tabletop objects, or as a prop in a French-style table setting. It is sold as a decorative collectible and has not been tested for food use.
