French ironstone plates
This set of two soup plates represents the finest French ironstone production from the renowned Salins pottery works during the 19th century. The French ironstone plates display the characteristic white earthenware body that made this factory famous throughout Europe.
Each plate features the classic Garland pattern executed in the Louis XVI neoclassical style. Black transfer-printed decoration adorns the rim with intricate scrollwork and foliage motifs creating repeating garland designs. The printing quality demonstrates the technical mastery of French ceramic decorators of this period. The central well remains undecorated, allowing the white ironstone surface to provide contrast.
The plates measure 24cm in diameter (9.5 inches), making them ideal for soup service or deep dining presentations. Condition appears very good with crisp transfer printing and minimal wear consistent with age. The backstamp reads "E.C. Terre de Fer Salins Guirlandes" confirming authentic French manufacture from this celebrated pottery.
These antique French ironstone plates would complement any collection of 19th century French ceramics or serve admirably in period table settings.
