French Impressionist Oil Painting River Landscape Boat Signed Frame 03112616

French Impressionist oil painting river landscape

A small, quietly confident French Impressionist oil painting river landscape, painted on board and set into an ornate grey-painted wood frame with layered mouldings and a carved leaf-and-rope border. The style and palette place it comfortably in the mid-twentieth century tradition of plein-air painting along the rivers of central and northern France, where weekend painters would set up their easels along the banks of the Seine, the Loire or the Marne and capture the shifting light on the water.

The composition draws the eye from a leafy bank on the left -- brushed in warm ochres, deep greens and flickers of blue -- across a wide, softly shimmering river to a dense treeline on the far shore. A single dark flat-bottomed boat sits at rest in the middle distance, its reflection broken by loose, confident strokes. The palette of teal, sage, gold and pale sky reads beautifully in a study, a sitting room or a hallway. On the back, a handwritten French dedication in cursive reads what appears to be a personal inscription followed by the signature E. Wotton (quoted as it appears), adding a layer of human warmth to the work. The grey-painted frame, with its textured gesso ground and faded gilded highlights, is entirely in keeping with French bourgeois domestic interiors of the period.

Condition and patina consistent with age. The frame shows natural wear, some paint loss along the mouldings and a small nail visible at the right inner edge, all of which add honest character. The painting surface itself is in good vintage condition with no visible restoration.

Approx. 13.4 in wide x 11.4 in high (34 x 29 cm) with the frame; canvas approx. 10.6 in wide x 8.8 in high (26.8 x 22.3 cm).
