French green glazed terracotta jug

A handsome French green glazed terracotta jug of the kind that was a fixture in the farmhouses and market kitchens of southern and central France for well over a century. Poterie vernissee -- green-glazed earthenware -- was produced across multiple French regions to serve the everyday needs of country households, and pieces like this one, with their two sturdy loop handles and a small side spout, were used to carry water, olive oil or wine from the cellar to the table.

The form is confident and well-balanced: a full, round belly narrows to a short neck with a slightly pinched lip, flanked by two arching strap handles and fitted with a small tubular spout at the shoulder -- a detail that sets this piece apart from a simple vase. The glaze is a deep forest green, shading to a lighter, almost amber tone at the neck where the firing ran hotter, with the characteristic bubbling and uneven pooling of a hand-applied lead-free country glaze. Spots of bare terracotta show through where the glaze thinned or flaked over time, adding to the authenticity of the piece. On a kitchen shelf, a farmhouse table or grouped with other French country ceramics, it brings warmth and quiet history to any interior.

Condition and patina consistent with age. Several small glaze losses are visible across the body, and light wear is present at the base, all typical of a working country piece of this age.

Approx. 8.5 in tall (21.5 cm) at the highest point.
