French glazed stoneware pot
A compact French glazed stoneware pot with two small loop handles, almost certainly 19th century, of the type made in great numbers across rural French workshops for storing lard, confit, preserves or salted provisions. The form -- squat, wide-bellied and short-necked -- follows a utilitarian tradition that changed little for generations in the French countryside, where these pots (pots a graisse, or French kitchen storage crocks) were as common in a farmhouse larder as cast iron was at the hearth.
The exterior carries a deep, dark glaze that reads almost black in shadow and shifts toward warm brown and faint green in raking light -- a classic manganese-rich country glaze fired to a low sheen. The interior is coated in a smooth olive-amber glaze, characteristic of the period, while the broad unglazed rim reveals the sandy, fire-reddened clay beneath. The two small handles sit neatly at the shoulder, hand-applied and slightly asymmetric in the way wheel-thrown country pottery always is. A handsome piece to cluster on a kitchen shelf, tuck into a styled bookcase or use as a small planter.
Condition and patina consistent with age. Light glaze losses and natural crazing across the exterior surface, visible throughout, and some wear along the unglazed rim -- all expected and honest marks of a working piece from another century.
Approx. 5 in wide x 4 in high (13 x 10.5 cm).
