French Glass Cloche Dome
A French glass cloche dome of considerable age, intended originally as a cheese or food cover and now equally suited to display use. The seller notes it is a very old model, and this is supported by the handle design, which is distinctly hand-formed and unlike modern production pieces. The French glass cloche dome sits directly on a flat surface with no accompanying base plate.
The cloche is blown from clear glass with a faint warm tint visible in certain light. The knob handle at the apex is the most distinctive feature: a rounded bulbous form with a textured, petal-like or berry-cluster top, clearly hand-worked and characteristic of older French glassmaking. The dome transitions smoothly from the rounded crown to a straight cylindrical lower section, creating a classic bell profile. Two areas of damage are present and must be noted honestly: a crack running from near the base of the handle down toward the dome body, and a chip at the lower rim. Both are visible in the close-up photographs provided. These flaws are the reason for sale at a reduced value, as the seller states explicitly.
Dimensions as provided by the seller: 15.5cm wide x 19.5cm tall / 6.1" wide x 7.7" tall. These measurements refer to the dome only, without a base.
Despite the damage, the cloche retains strong decorative presence and the handle form alone makes it a point of interest for collectors of antique French glassware or farmhouse-style interiors. It could serve as a display cover for small objects, dried botanicals, or as a prop in a styled interior setting where condition is secondary to character.
