French glass cloche dome
A French glass cloche dome -- known in France as a cloche a gateau, used to cover cakes, cheese boards or pastries on the kitchen or dining table. Made from clear blown glass, this dome form with a solid round knob handle at the crown is a familiar object in French farmhouse households, and appears to date from the latter decades of the twentieth century. It functions equally as a display cover for curios or botanicals.
The cloche is fully transparent with a very faint green cast typical of recycled or lightly tinted blown glass. The profile is a classic half-sphere tapering to a slightly flattened neck where the solid glass knob handle is formed. The rim at the base is thin and unpolished, ground flat to sit evenly on a flat surface. No maker's mark, stamp, label or etching is visible anywhere on the glass. The knob shows the characteristic small pontil hole from the blowing process, visible in photo 2, confirming handmade production.
Photo 3, taken from inside the dome, shows light surface scratches on the interior of the glass and a hazy residue consistent with condensation or storage. The scratches and haze are age wear. This item is sold as a decorative collectible and has not been tested for food use. Sold as pictured.
Dimensions: 8.3 x 6.3 in (21 x 16 cm). At this size the dome will cover a small round cake, a wedge of cheese, or a grouped still-life arrangement on a sideboard or shelf. The thin rim and clear glass make it practical for display under good light.
