French Galvanized Zinc Flower Buckets
A well-matched pair of French galvanized zinc flower buckets of the kind once found lining the floors of every fleuriste and marche aux fleurs across France. Formed from sheet zinc folded and seamed by hand, each bucket rises in a classic tapered cylinder with a gently rolled lip -- the utilitarian form that French florists relied on for keeping cut blooms fresh from market to counter. The material, galvanized zinc, was the workhorse of the French countryside through much of the early twentieth century, used for everything from milking pails to shop fittings.
The exterior of each bucket carries a beautifully mottled silver-grey surface where the zinc coating has developed its characteristic crystalline patterning over decades of use. Lighter and darker passages of grey shift across the body, giving the pair a quiet, organic presence that suits a French farmhouse aesthetic or a cool, graphic interior equally well. Displayed together, they make a strong architectural statement on a mantel, entry hall or kitchen shelf; filled with branches, dried botanicals or a generous bunch of tulips, they are quietly striking. The visible seam running down the side of each bucket is a mark of their hand-formed construction.
Condition and patina consistent with age. The interiors show the expected darkening and light rust spotting at the base of each bucket, visible in the photos.
Each bucket measures approx. 8.5 in wide x 11.8 in tall (21.5 x 30 cm). Price is for the pair.
