French oyster plates
This set of two vintage French oyster plates represents the ceramic traditions of Brittany, handcrafted by MBFA (Manufacture Bretonne de Faiencerie d'Art) in Pornic during the 1970s. Located near the renowned Quimper pottery region, this workshop produced distinctive faience pieces that reflect the expressive Breton artistic heritage.
Each plate displays bold hand-painted decoration featuring red and orange oval compartments outlined in black brushwork against a crosshatched gray and white background. The surface treatment shows the characteristic brushwork technique of mid-century Breton ceramics, with visible texture and flowing painted lines that create dynamic visual movement across each piece.
The plates measure 9 7/8 inches (25.2cm) in diameter and feature six shell-shaped compartments designed for oyster service, plus a central well for accompaniments. Each piece bears the authentic maker's mark "M.B.F.A. PORNIC Peint a la main" on the reverse, confirming their hand-painted origin and workshop provenance. The faience construction shows appropriate aging consistent with pieces from this period.
These functional serving pieces suit both culinary use and decorative display, representing the continuing tradition of French faience pottery that connects historical ceramic techniques with mid-century modern design sensibilities.
