French Enamel Chasse Interdite Sign
A French enamel Chasse Interdite sign of the type widely used across rural France to mark private land where hunting is prohibited. "Chasse Interdite" translates directly as "Hunting Forbidden" and these enamelled metal plaques were a standard fixture on French countryside properties, forests and estates from the mid-20th century onward. The code A17 stamped in the lower left corner identifies this as a standardised official pattern, consistent with French signage regulations of the postwar period.
The sign is made from pressed steel with a vitreous enamel finish applied in a vivid red ground with raised white lettering in a bold block typeface. The letters are embossed rather than flat, giving the text a three-dimensional relief that is characteristic of quality French enamel signage from this era. The white border follows the contoured edge of the pressed steel panel, which has clipped corners and four mounting holes at the corners plus two additional holes on the top and bottom centre edges for secure outdoor fixing. The surface retains strong gloss and the enamel shows no significant chipping or crazing, indicating good overall condition with light age-appropriate wear.
The sign measures 33cm x 20cm / 13.0" x 7.9". Its compact rectangular format made it practical for posting on fence posts, gates and tree trunks across the French countryside.
As a piece of French vernacular graphic design, this sign is collected both for display in rustic interiors and as an example of mid-century French public signage. The bold red-and-white colour scheme and embossed typography work well as wall decor in kitchens, studies or country-house settings.
