French School Map Poster Madagascar
Produced by Editions Rossignol of Montmorillon (Vienne), this double-sided French school map poster Madagascar dates from the mid-20th century and was designed for classroom use in French primary or secondary education. One side presents a detailed physical and economic map of Madagascar (numbered N23), while the reverse displays a world map of La Communaute Francaise (N24), showing French overseas territories and associated states at the time of the French Community period around 1958-1960.
The Madagascar side shows topographic elevation using a clear color-coded key ranging from sea level to above 2000m, with cities including Tananarive, Tamatave, Majunga, and Diego-Suarez marked by scaled red dots indicating population size. Economic resources such as graphite, coffee, cattle (boeufs), rice, mica, charcoal, and vanilla are labeled directly on the map in red italic text. The Comoros archipelago and La Reunion are also featured. The reverse world map uses pink shading for French departments and overseas territories, and amber shading for other states of the French Community, with inset maps of Guyane, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Tahiti, Miquelon, and Nouvelle-Caledonie. Both sides carry the Rossignol publisher imprint and reference numbers N23-24.
The poster measures approximately 90cm x 75cm / 35.4" x 29.5". The paper shows age-consistent toning and minor handling marks typical of former classroom use, consistent with a used condition. No significant tears or losses are visible in the photos.
A collectible document from the late French colonial period, this double-sided map is a useful reference for historians, collectors of cartographic ephemera, and vintage school decor enthusiasts. The Rossignol educational series is well documented and sought after by French vintage print collectors worldwide.
