French Digoin Stoneware Mixing Bowl
Produced at the Digoin pottery works in Burgundy, this French Digoin stoneware mixing bowl dates to the mid-twentieth century and is a classic example of utilitarian French kitchen ceramics. Digoin was one of the most prolific stoneware manufacturers in France, supplying households and professional kitchens with durable, practical wares throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The bowl carries an impressed mark on the unglazed base, clearly visible in the photos, along with what appears to be a size number stamped into the clay — consistent with Digoin production practice.
The exterior body is left in an unglazed, raw grey-beige stoneware finish with a slightly sandy texture, while the interior and the wide flat rim are coated in a translucent off-white glaze with a characteristic pooling effect visible on the rim. The rim is broad and stepped, a practical feature that provided a grip during mixing. The form tapers toward a modest foot ring. Minor surface marks and kiln spotting are visible, consistent with age and honest use — no chips or cracks are apparent from the photos.
The bowl measures approximately 21.5cm wide and 10.5cm tall, converting to roughly 8.5" in diameter and 4.1" in height. This is a generous size, well suited to mixing doughs or serving salads, which aligns with the traditional domestic function of such Digoin pieces.
This type of French country stoneware mixing bowl has become a sought-after item among collectors of farmhouse kitchenware and vintage French ceramics. It works equally well as a functional kitchen piece or as a display object on a shelf or dresser.
