French Copper Saucepan Mauviel
Stamped clearly on the body: MAUVIEL VILLEDIEU and MADE IN FRANCE. This French copper saucepan is a classic example of the professional-grade cookware that has been produced in Villedieu-les-Poeles, Normandy, for centuries -- a town so closely associated with coppersmithing that it earned the nickname "the city of copper." The body is hand-formed from 2 mm thick copper, a gauge associated with serious kitchen use, and the interior carries its original tin lining. The handle is cast iron, secured to the pan with copper rivets in the traditional manner.
The exterior glows with the warm, rosy tone of polished copper that has lived a real life, and the cast iron handle has developed the dark, heavy patina that comes only with years of hearth and stove use. A French copper saucepan of this construction is as much at home on a kitchen shelf as it is in active rotation -- it can be re-tinned and put back to work, or displayed as a piece of French farmhouse material culture. The Mauviel name, still active today from the same Normandy town, gives this piece a clear and honest provenance.
Condition and patina consistent with age. The tin lining shows significant wear, scratching and darkening throughout, as visible in the interior photo; the copper exterior is sound with light surface marks and a small dark spot to the lower wall.
Diameter approximately 4.9 in (12.5 cm); copper wall thickness approximately 0.8 in (2 cm).
