French copper saucepan Mauviel
Stamped clearly on the exterior wall are two marks that tell the whole story: MAUVIEL VILLEDIEU and MADE IN FRANCE. Mauviel has been producing copper cookware in Villedieu-les-Poeles, a small Norman town long celebrated as the copper capital of France, for generations, and this solid French copper saucepan Mauviel is a handsome example of that tradition. The body is spun from heavy-gauge copper, lined in tin in the old manner, and fitted with a cast iron handle secured by copper rivets -- a construction associated with professional and serious domestic kitchens alike.
The exterior glows with that warm, burnished rose tone that only well-used copper achieves, and the straight cylindrical sides give the pan a classic, no-nonsense profile that sits naturally on a shelf, a pot rack or an open kitchen display. The tin lining, silvery and well patinated from honest use, is intact and shows the characteristic swirl marks left by the tinsmith's work. A piece like this belongs equally to the collector drawn to French farmhouse kitchenalia and to the cook who appreciates the unmatched heat conductivity of copper for sauces and reductions.
Condition and patina consistent with age. The tin lining shows dark staining and surface wear typical of a well-used pan; the copper exterior is bright and largely free of deep dents, with minor surface marks that only add to its character.
Approx. 7.1 in diameter (18 cm); wall thickness approx. 0.8 in (2 cm).
