Vintage French Colonial Educational Map Poster Madagascar Indochine 20082615

French Colonial Educational Map Poster

Produced for classroom use during the French colonial era, this double-sided French colonial educational map poster covers two major territories of the former French Empire: Madagascar (with an inset of La Reunion) on one side, and Indochine (French Indochina, covering present-day Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia) on the other. Published by Cooperation Pedagogique Nalliers (Vienne), these maps were standard school wall charts used across France to teach geography of its overseas territories.

Each side is printed in a clear, layered cartographic style using a warm terracotta and rose relief shading to indicate elevation zones, with blue used for waterways, ocean labels, and wind direction arrows (Mousson d'Ete, Mousson d'Hiver, Alize d'Hiver). The Madagascar side marks key cities including Tananarive, Tamatave, Majunga, and Diego-Suarez, and notes agricultural and mineral resources such as Riz, Boeufs, Graphite, Mica, Cafe, and Vanille. The Indochine side identifies Hanoi, Haiphong, Hue, Saigon, Cholon, and Pnom-Penh, and indicates resources including Houille, Fer, Etain, Riz, Caoutchouc, and Pecheries. Both sides include population-scale legends and elevation keys. A small inset on the Indochine side shows the French Etablissements in India (Pondichery, Karikal, Mahe, Yanaon, Chandernagor).

The poster measures approximately 90cm x 75cm (35.4" x 29.5"). Condition is used and consistent with a school wall chart of this age: one small tear is visible on the lower left edge of the Indochine side, with some light overall wear. The paper is intact and the print remains clear and legible across both sides.

A period document of French colonial cartography, this poster appeals to collectors of vintage school maps, French colonial history, and mid-20th century printed ephemera. The double-sided format covering both Madagascar and Indochina makes it an uncommon find.
