French Champagne Ice Bucket
A classic French champagne ice bucket branded for Laurent-Perrier, the storied Champagne house established in 1812 in Tours-sur-Marne, near Reims. Spun from polished aluminum and stamped on the base ARGIT / MADE IN FRANCE, this seau a champagne -- the table-side wine cooler that was a fixture in French brasseries and fine dining rooms throughout the postwar decades -- speaks directly to that confident, unfussy French art of entertaining.
The bucket carries a warm polished finish that picks up light beautifully, and the original branded label remains intact on the front, printed with the Laurent-Perrier name in flowing script above the house address. Two cast ring handles are riveted at either side in the sturdy, no-nonsense manner typical of mid-century French hotel and restaurant ware. The raised concentric bands near the rim and base give the form a quietly handsome, well-balanced profile. Today it works as well on a bar cart, a kitchen counter or a dining table as it ever did in the restaurant setting for which it was made -- filled with ice for a bottle of champagne or sparkling water, or simply displayed as a piece of graphic French barware.
Condition and patina consistent with age. The interior shows light scratching from use, as visible in the photos, and the label has some age-related softening at the edges; the exterior polish remains strong and the handles are solid.
Approx. 8.1 in diameter (20.5 cm).
