French Champagne Ice Bucket

Engraved in flowing script across its front, "Champagne Henry Goulet Reims" identifies this handsome French champagne ice bucket -- a seau a champagne -- as a promotional piece from one of the Champagne region's distinguished historic houses, founded in Reims. Made of silver plated metal with a copper substrate visible where the plating has worn, it dates to the early twentieth century, a period when grand restaurants and hotels across France presented their finest bottles in exactly this style of cooler.

The bucket carries the classic proportions of the type: a gently tapering cylindrical body banded at top and bottom with engraved parallel lines, and a pair of cast decorative handles in an organic, foliate form -- a detail that lifts it well above the plain ring-handle version. The interior has a raised central boss at the base, the traditional feature that kept a bottle upright in ice. Today it works equally well as a wine cooler, a bar cart centerpiece, a utensil holder, or simply displayed on a shelf where its silver surface and engraved script draw the eye.

Condition and patina consistent with age. The exterior shows surface scratches, light tarnishing and some loss of silver plating, most visible on the reverse and around the handles; the interior has oxidized to a deep pewter tone throughout.

Approx. 7.9 in diameter (20 cm).
