French Champagne Ice Bucket
A handsome French champagne ice bucket -- the seau a champagne -- made in France by Argit of Meaux, a well-regarded mid-century producer of polished aluminum tableware and barware. Shaped in the classic flared silhouette that graced hotel trolleys and dining tables across France from the postwar decades onward, it carries all the understated elegance the French brought even to everyday entertaining.
The body is spun aluminum buffed to a bright silver-tone finish, with a gently flared rim and a sturdy ribbed collar at the base that gives the form a quietly Art Deco quality. The two ring handles are anchored by cast vine-leaf and grape-cluster mounts -- a nod to la vigne that is entirely at home on a piece designed to keep wine cold. The maker's mark is stamped into the base and reads clearly: ARGIT MADE IN FRANCE, with MOD. MEAUX above. It would sit equally well on a bar cart, a sideboard or a holiday table, pressed into actual use or simply displayed as a piece of mid-century French design.
Condition and patina consistent with age. The polished exterior shows light surface wear in keeping with use, and the interior has the soft matte oxidation typical of vintage aluminum.
Approx. 7.9 in tall (20 cm).
