French Ceramic Berry Colander Bowl Splatter Glaze Earthenware Vintage 0910267

French Ceramic Berry Colander Bowl

A French ceramic berry colander bowl in sturdy earthenware, finished inside with an ochre-toned slip ground and bold black splatter glaze -- a two-piece set comprising the perforated colander and its matching catch dish. The form is shallow and wide-lipped, a familiar shape in the French domestic tradition where a passoire en terre cuite (earthenware colander) was kept at hand for rinsing small fruits straight from the garden. The hand-pierced drainage holes are arranged across the base and up the sides of the inner bowl, the outer dish collecting the water neatly below.

What makes this piece pleasing is the graphic energy of the decoration: the splatter pattern is loose and confident, ranging from fine dots to broad ink-dark pools, giving the cream interior real visual presence. The exterior is left in a warm brown glaze, honest and unfussy. The construction is clearly handmade -- the holes are individually pierced, and slight variations in the rim confirm wheel-thrown origins. On the counter it works beautifully as a fruit rinser for strawberries, raspberries or currants; displayed on a shelf or dresser it holds its own as a piece of French country earthenware with a graphic, modern edge. It also reads well as a vide poche, an everyday catch-all for the kitchen windowsill.

Condition and patina consistent with age. Light glaze losses are visible along the exterior wall, and there is some minor surface wear to the base, both in keeping with a well-used kitchen piece.
