French Brass Photo Frame Glass
A French brass photo frame glass of the Louis XVI revival type, most likely dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. The frame holds two panes of beveled clear glass sandwiched together, secured by a gilt brass mount at the top and a brass base bar below, with no traditional surround — the beveled glass itself forms the visible border on all four sides.
The top mount is cast in gilt brass with a detailed floral and foliage garland motif centered on a wreath, flanked by roses and scrolling leaves — a decorative vocabulary consistent with the Louis XVI or Napoleon III taste for classical ornament. A small brass ring is attached at the back to connect the hinged stand. The base is fitted with two ball feet in gilt brass. The adjustable stand at the rear is a flat hinged brass strut with a toothed rack mechanism allowing the angle of display to be adjusted. One of the lower glass corners shows a small chip, visible in the photos and noted here for accuracy. The brass shows light patina consistent with age.
Dimensions: approximately 6.5cm wide x 13.5cm tall / 2.6" x 5.3". These are the glass panel dimensions as stated by the seller. Overall height including the decorative crest is slightly greater.
A French brass photo frame glass of this type suits a dressing table, desk or mantelpiece setting. The absence of a paper or velvet backing means a photograph or card is slipped directly between the two glass panes, held in place by the brass top bar. It would display a carte-de-visite or similar period photograph to good effect.
