French blue white transferware bowl
A wide, shallow French blue white transferware bowl in earthenware, marked on the base with the shield and crown device reading "Digoin & Sarreguemines" -- the well-regarded Lorraine manufactory that produced some of France's most appealing printed ceramics from the mid-nineteenth century onward. The form is classic: a gently flared silhouette resting on a low foot ring, the proportions suited equally to a table centerpiece or a kitchen dresser shelf.
The transfer print is a layered composition of full-blown roses, hydrangea clusters and botanical foliage rendered in a soft, slightly faded blue against the cream-white ground -- exactly the look that French country interiors made famous. A geometric Greek-key and diamond border frames the inner rim, while additional sprays wrap the outer wall. The crazing visible across the base is the natural result of age and tells you this piece has genuinely lived in a French household. Today it works handsomely as a fruit bowl, a bread basket liner or a stand-alone decorative accent in a blue-and-white collection.
Condition and patina consistent with age. Light crazing throughout the glaze and some soft discoloration on the interior consistent with long use; the transfer print remains clear and legible with no significant loss.
Approx. 13.4 in diameter x 3.9 in high (34 x 10 cm).
