A French bamboo wall coat rack in the classic porte-manteau style, made from a solid turned-wood rod crafted to imitate the segmented nodes of bamboo, a decorative conceit that was widely popular in French furniture and furnishing accessories from the late nineteenth century well into the mid-twentieth. Seven individual pegs project forward from the rod, each one turned into a satisfying ball finial at the tip -- the kind of detail that speaks of a skilled atelier rather than a factory floor. Small iron hanging loops are fitted at intervals along the back for wall mounting.

The warm honey-amber tone of the wood has deepened pleasantly with age, and the dark painted lines that accentuate each bamboo segment give the piece a graphic quality that reads as confidently in a modern entryway as it would in a French farmhouse hallway. Faux-bamboo accessories like this were a staple of French decorative craft, found in bourgeois apartments and country maisons alike, used for coats, hats, scarves and bags. Today it works equally well as a functional coat rack or as a decorative wall installation alongside mirrors and art.

Condition and patina consistent with age. The iron hanging loops show some surface rust, and the wood carries the light scuffs and minor marks of honest use over the decades -- nothing that diminishes the charm or structural integrity of the piece.
