French Bamboo Coat Rack

A handsome French bamboo coat rack from the early twentieth century, wall-mounted and fitted with six generously turned wooden ball-tipped pegs evenly spaced along a slender bamboo rail. Wall racks of this form -- called a porte-manteau in French -- were a fixture of the French country entryway and back-kitchen passage, kept close at hand for coats, aprons, bags and hats. The bamboo rail is warm and cylindrical, articulated by characteristic node rings that break its length into natural segments, while the pegs themselves are lathe-turned solid wood, each ending in a satisfying rounded knob.

The finish has deepened to a rich honey-amber that suits both a farmhouse hallway and a more curated interior. Small iron D-ring loops at each end of the rail are the original wall-mounting hardware, sturdy and ready to use. Six pegs give the rack generous capacity, and the long horizontal format makes it equally at home above a mudroom bench, along a bedroom wall or in a well-dressed kitchen passage where bags and linen towels can hang within reach. The combination of bamboo and turned wood gives it a graphic quality that reads well in both collected and minimal settings.

Condition and patina consistent with age. Light surface wear and minor knocks to the wooden pegs, entirely in keeping with a well-used antique household piece. The iron rings show natural oxidation.
