French Bamboo Coat Rack
A wall-mounted French bamboo coat rack with five turned wooden pegs, dating to the mid-20th century and typical of the faux-bamboo decorative style popular in French interiors from the 1950s through the 1970s. The French bamboo coat rack was designed for hallway or bedroom use and retains its original iron hanging loops along the top rail, allowing it to be fixed directly to a wall.
The rail is crafted from turned wood shaped and finished to mimic bamboo, with incised black-painted rings at regular intervals creating the segmented node effect characteristic of this style. Each of the five pegs extends outward from the rail at a slight downward angle, terminating in a rounded, lathe-turned spherical knob. The wood displays a warm amber-brown tone with visible grain on the knob ends. The iron hanging loops show age-consistent oxidation. Minor surface wear is present consistent with age and prior use, but the structure is sound with all five pegs intact.
The rail measures approximately 61cm in length (24"), with each peg extending roughly 8cm to 9cm (approximately 3.1" to 3.5") from the rail face. The overall depth including the peg knobs is approximately 10cm (3.9"). These dimensions make it well suited to a hallway, cloakroom or bathroom setting.
Wall-mounted wooden coat racks in the faux-bamboo style have seen consistent collector interest in recent years, particularly in France and the United States where mid-century rustic-modern interiors remain popular. This example offers practical storage capacity alongside a period aesthetic that works well in both vintage and contemporary settings.
