French Bamboo Coat Rack
A wall-mounted French bamboo coat rack dating from the mid-20th century, designed to hang coats, bags or towels in an entryway or bathroom. The French bamboo coat rack format -- a horizontal rail fitted with multiple projecting pegs -- was widely produced in France during the 1950s and 1960s, combining natural materials with practical domestic function.
The rail is turned wood with a bamboo-effect finish, featuring incised ring grooves at regular intervals that simulate bamboo joints. Five pegs project forward from the rail, each terminating in a rounded spherical wooden knob. The pegs are held in place by small iron wire collars at each joint point. Two small iron hanging loops are fixed to the top of the rail for wall mounting. The overall tone is a warm amber-brown, consistent throughout the rail and peg knobs. The wood shows natural patina and light surface wear consistent with age and use. No chips, cracks or repairs are visible in the photos.
The rail measures approximately 61cm in length / 24" as stated by the seller. The peg knobs extend approximately 8cm to 9cm / 3.1" to 3.5" forward from the rail. Overall depth with pegs is approximately 10cm / 4".
A versatile piece suited to an entryway, hallway, bathroom or children's room. The five-peg format provides practical hanging capacity, and the bamboo-style turned wood fits well with mid-century, bohemian or natural interior schemes. Comparable examples appear regularly in French brocante markets and have gained steady collector interest.
