French bamboo coat rack

A handsome French bamboo coat rack in turned and painted wood, designed to hang flat against an entryway wall and carry coats, hats, scarves or bags on its five projecting pegs. The style -- a cylindrical rail shaped and scored to read as bamboo, fitted with lathe-turned pegs that end in a rounded, acorn-like ball -- was a staple of French farmhouse interiors from the late nineteenth century well into the mid-twentieth, when the portemanteau, or wall coat rack, was as essential to a French home as the front door itself. Each peg pivots slightly outward from the rail on a turned neck, giving the piece its lively, sculptural silhouette.

The wood carries a warm amber tone with a lacquered finish that has mellowed attractively over the decades. Black painted grooves accentuate the bamboo segments along the rail and the rings on each peg, adding graphic rhythm without fuss. Three small iron wire loops along the top of the rail served as the original wall-mounting hardware and remain in place. The piece reads equally well in a French country hallway, a bathroom or a bedroom, and works as a display bar for linen towels or lightweight bags just as readily as for outerwear.

Condition and patina consistent with age. A few small surface holes are visible along the rail, as seen in the photos; one of the turned pegs shows a minor age-related crack at its base.
