French Bamboo Coat Rack

A wall-mounted French bamboo coat rack from the mid-20th century, designed to hang near an entrance or in a hallway. The piece features a turned wooden rail crafted to mimic bamboo jointing, a decorative technique widely used in French domestic furniture of the 1950s and 1960s. The French bamboo coat rack is fitted with five outward-projecting pegs, each topped with a turned acorn-shaped knob, providing practical hanging points for coats, hats, bags or scarves.

The rail is lathe-turned from solid beechwood, stained in a warm amber-brown tone with a lacquered finish. Incised black lines at regular intervals simulate the nodes of natural bamboo, a faux-bamboo style (bambou tourne) that was fashionable in French interiors from the 1940s through the 1970s. Each of the five pegs replicates the same bamboo-segment profile as the main rail, with a rounded acorn finial at the tip. Two small metal hanging loops are fixed to the back of the rail, spaced toward each end, for wall mounting. The wood shows light surface wear consistent with age and use, with minor patina on the finish.

The rail measures approximately 61cm in length / 24.0". The overall projection of the pegs from the wall when mounted is approximately 8cm / 3.1". The rail diameter at its widest bamboo-node sections is approximately 4cm / 1.6". These dimensions make it a practical and compact wall hanger suited to smaller entryways.

The faux-bamboo turned wood style has a consistent following among collectors of French mid-century decorative objects. This coat rack would suit a vintage or mid-century interior scheme and remains fully functional for everyday use.
