French Art Deco Silver Plated Champagne Ice Bucket
A polished French Art Deco silver plated champagne ice bucket -- the seau a champagne -- produced during France's golden age of tabletop metalware, when hotel restaurants and bourgeois dining rooms alike relied on pieces exactly like this one to serve a properly chilled bottle at the table. The form is silver plate over a base metal, built to be used and admired in equal measure.
The bucket carries all the hallmarks of the Art Deco moment: a gently tapered cylinder that widens toward the flared lip, a series of engraved horizontal bands banding the upper body and a matching set of stepped rings at the base that give the whole silhouette a composed, architectural rhythm. Most distinctive are the handles -- pairs of spheres clustered in descending size on each side, a motif that reads as both graphic and quietly playful. The exterior retains its bright mirror polish across much of the body, with the warm copper undertone of the base metal lending depth and age where the plating has mellowed. A handsome piece equally at home on a bar cart, a sideboard or a well-dressed dining table, used with ice and a bottle or simply displayed.
Condition and patina consistent with age. The interior shows the expected dulling and light surface oxidation of a piece that has seen genuine use; the exterior polish is well preserved with minor scattered spotting visible at close range.
Approx. 8.1 in tall (20.5 cm).
