French Antique Transferware Platter
An oval French antique transferware platter in cream-glazed faience, decorated in a soft slate blue with sprays of currants, gooseberries and broad lobed leaves scattered across the well and a delicate lace-like border running the full length of the rim. French faience production flourished across multiple regional centres throughout the nineteenth century, and oval platters in this format were staple pieces of the bourgeois table, made to carry roasted meats or cold salads in generous style.
The botanical motif here is graphic and assured, with tightly printed clusters of berries rendered in crisp detail against the warm, patinated ground. The back bears a rectangular blue printed mark -- partially legible in the photographs -- consistent with a French faience manufactory, along with an incised letter mark. The platter works equally well displayed upright on a plate rack or dresser shelf as it does laid flat on a dining table or kitchen counter, where its cool blue tones read beautifully against linen or natural wood.
Condition and patina consistent with age. The cream ground shows overall crazing and some light tonal variation from decades of use, both of which add to its honest character. The decoration remains clear and well-defined throughout.
Approx. 14.4 in x 10.0 in (36.5 x 25.5 cm).
