French antique terracotta jar
A French antique terracotta jar of the kind once produced in abundance across the rural pottery workshops of France, where low-fired earthenware was the everyday answer to storing lard, confiture or salted herbs on a farmhouse pantry shelf. The body is shaped as a sturdy upright cylinder with a subtly rolled rim, thrown from coarse red clay and left unglazed on the exterior -- the classic approach of provincial potiers who reserved their glaze for the surfaces that needed to be sealed.
What gives this pot its quiet character is the contrast between its rough, matte exterior -- carrying the natural warm ochre and sienna tones of the raw clay -- and its deep amber-brown glazed interior, which shows the speckled, slightly pooled quality of a hand-applied slip glaze fired at low temperature. White mineral deposits and a faint surface indent on one side speak to decades of honest use and storage. Today it works equally well as a utensil holder on a kitchen counter, a vase for dried grasses or a handsome accent on a shelf of collected French ceramics.
Condition and patina consistent with age. Light mineral efflorescence on the exterior and a small surface impression on the body are visible; the glazed interior is intact and sound.
Approx. 4.9 in wide x 5.9 in tall (12.5 x 15 cm).
