French Antique Terracotta Confit Pot
A French antique terracotta confit pot -- the pot a confit of the French farmhouse kitchen -- hand-thrown from red earthenware clay and fired to a warm, dusty salmon tone. Pieces like this were made in rural pottery workshops throughout southern and central France from the 18th century onward, produced in quantity to store slow-cooked duck, goose or pork preserved under their own fat. The form is classic and purposeful: slightly tapered walls that widen toward a rolling lip, a broad flat base for stability, and a compact cylindrical profile sized for a single household portion.
The interior and rim are coated in a rich amber-brown glaze -- applied thickly enough that it drips slightly over the lip -- which sealed the vessel and made it easy to wipe clean. The unglazed exterior retains the character of the original clay, with faint concentric throwing lines and the kind of pale mineral ghosting that comes from decades of honest use. It is a handsome, well-balanced little pot that sits naturally on a kitchen shelf, a windowsill or a wood table, and works just as well holding wooden spoons, herbs or a simple bunch of flowers today as it once did preserving a winter meal.
Condition and patina consistent with age. Light wear along the rim and minor surface marks to the exterior body; the glaze interior is intact and glossy.
Approx. 4.5 in wide x 4.7 in high (11.5 x 12 cm).
