French Antique Stoneware Confit Pot

A French antique stoneware confit pot of the type produced in rural France during the 19th century for preserving meats, fats, and seasonal produce. This French antique stoneware confit pot features the classic form associated with traditional French farmhouse storage: a wide cylindrical body, a broad flat rim designed to be sealed with cloth or wax, and two small squared loop handles applied at the shoulders. The overall glaze is a pale beige-grey with a glossy finish that shows natural variation and patina consistent with age and use.

The stoneware body is wheel-thrown, as evidenced by the visible turning rings on the interior walls. The glaze is applied across the exterior and rim, leaving the base unglazed — a common characteristic of French provincial stoneware. The pale grey-beige tone is even across the surface, with darker earthy patches visible where the clay body shows through or where the glaze has thinned slightly. A small impressed or scratched mark — possibly a capacity number — is visible near the shoulder on one side, consistent with production marking practices used by regional French potteries. The handles are functional in form, folded and attached directly to the shoulder ridge. The seller notes a hairline crack (fele) visible in the photos; this is confirmed in the images as a fine line running down one side of the body, with no apparent loss of material.

The pot measures approximately 18cm tall / 7.1" in height. The outer diameter at the widest point of the body is estimated at approximately 19-20cm / 7.5-7.9" based on the photos. The rim opening is wide and open, suitable for display use.

This type of grey-glazed French confit pot is sought after as a decorative object in farmhouse and country interiors. It works well as a planter, utensil holder, or standalone display piece on a wooden shelf or sideboard.
