French Antique Soup Tureen

Produced by Creil et Montereau, one of the most respected French faience manufacturers of the 19th century, this French antique soup tureen represents the classic round covered tureen form that was standard in bourgeois French households from the mid-1800s onward. The factory, established through the merger of the Creil and Montereau potteries, was known for its high-quality white earthenware and ironstone-type faience. This tureen base is presented without its lid, which should be factored into the purchase decision.

The body is glazed in an all-white finish with a faint blue-grey tint visible in the interior, consistent with the white faience typical of Creil et Montereau production. The form is rounded and bulbous, set on a stepped circular foot ring. Two applied handles are positioned on either side: one is a scrolled ring-and-cartouche style handle, the other a more naturalistic branch-form handle. Close inspection of the photos reveals a hairline crack on one of the branch handles, and minor surface speckling and age spots consistent with antique earthenware. The rim shows a raised ledge designed to seat a matching lid. No maker's mark is visible in the provided photos, though the form and glaze are consistent with known Creil et Montereau production.

The tureen measures 24cm wide by 16.5cm tall (9.4" x 6.5"), measured across the body excluding handles. These dimensions make it a substantial serving piece suitable for a dining table centerpiece or display.

Presented without its lid, this tureen works well as a decorative object on a kitchen shelf, sideboard or as part of a collection of French white faience.
