Sarreguemines Compote Pedestal Bowl
A footed compote dish produced by the Sarreguemines factory in northeastern France, stamped on the base with the mark "Germaine U & C Sarreguemines" -- a pattern name and maker's mark that places this Sarreguemines compote pedestal bowl firmly within the late 19th to early 20th century production period of one of France's most prolific faience manufacturers. The "U & C" designation refers to Utzschneider & Compagnie, the long-running Sarreguemines partnership active through the 1800s and into the early 1900s.
The piece is glazed in white ironstone or fine earthenware and decorated with a transfer-printed border pattern in slate blue and grey. The repeating design features geometric diamond-shaped cartouches, Greek key meander bands, fine dotted borders at both the rim and base foot, and delicate scrolling vine motifs connecting the main decorative elements. The palette is confined to two tones of blue-grey on a clean white ground. The pedestal stem is plain and undecorated, while the circular foot ring carries a dotted blue border matching the upper rim. The interior of the dish is undecorated, with a wide open well suited to displaying fruit or confections. Visible age-related speckling and minor surface marks are consistent with honest use and age.
The dish measures 22.5cm in diameter and 13.5cm in height, equivalent to approximately 8.9" across and 5.3" tall. These are mid-range proportions for a compote of this type, making it practical for table use as well as display.
A well-documented factory mark and a clearly identified pattern name make this a solid candidate for collectors of French faience or Sarreguemines wares specifically. The geometric transfer print has a confident, structured quality that suits both period and contemporary table settings.
